With water becoming an even greater valuable resource here in Australia, there are some basic things that you, as a householder can do to conserve this precious resource.
Leaks, either from dripping taps, or broken underground water pipes, have the potential to waste enormous amounts of water. Check the following hints and tips to help you save water - and money!
• Avoid planting trees within 2 metres of storm or sewer drains because as they grow there is the potential for the tree roots to infiltrate the pipes and cause a blockage.
• Overflowing external drains if not addressed can create soil and structural movement effecting bricks, concrete, stumps and walls. This can be very costly but avoided easily with a quick response to the blockage.
• If you are hearing gurgling noises from your waste pipes, there is a big chance you have a blockage. The sooner this is addressed the better, for the roots will become more mature and therefore more difficult to clear. Catching it early will reduce the work of the plumber and save you money.
• If you suspect a burst pipe a simple test can be performed. Ensure all plumbing fixtures on the premises are off. Go to the front of the property. Locate the water meter and if it is ticking over (i.e. the numbers are moving) you have a leak in your hot or cold water pipes.
• Always keep roof gutters clear of debris and leaves. This will allow a longer life span of your gutters and prevent costly overflows.
• If you smell gas at your property instantly call us to rectify the leak. This can be dangerous for the house and the occupants if not addressed.
• Dripping taps can be easily fixed. Ignored they can waste up to 200litres of water per day. |
